Size and Location
El Paso sets in the western-most corner of Texas where Texas, New Mexico and Juarez Old Mexico come together. Texas is a very large state and it is interesting the El Paso is almost as close to Los Angeles California (710 miles) as it is to Houston Texas (670 miles). With a population of about 700,000, El Paso is the 22nd most populous city in America. Cuidad Juarez, El Paso’s sister-city across the Rio Grande River into Mexico has a population of about 1,700,000 making the combined metropolitan population about 2.4 million people. Interesting Facts About El Paso
• El Paso actually was the site of the first Thanksgiving in April of 1598 predating the Pilgrims initial Thanksgiving by 23 years.

• El Paso and Juarez Mexico is the largest Metroplex International metropolis in the world with a combined 2.4 million population.

• El Paso is the third safest city in the United States per an FBI study.

• El Paso and Juarez have the oldest continuously active Spanish missions in the U.S.

• The notorious old west outlaw, John Wesley Hardin was assassinated in downtown El Paso and is buried in Concordia Cemetery.

• White Sands Missile Range that covers about 4,000 square miles in Southern New Mexico is only about 20 miles from El Paso. The world’s first atomic device was tested there and the Space Shuttle has landed at the range as an alternate Shuttle landing site.

• Fort Bliss which was established in 1848 is located in El Paso. It is now home to about 12,500 active military personnel and employs over 7,000 civilian employees.
