El Paso Overview
In about 1581, Spanish Conquistadors crossed the Rio Grande River into what is now Texas. Of course, during that period neither Texas, El Paso or the United State existed. The explorers named the river passage “El Paso del Rio del Norte” which translated means “the pass through the river of the north”. Hence the shortened name of “El Paso” which was officially given in 1598 when the area was colonized.

Today, El Paso is a thriving city of about 700,000 people and is among America’s fastest growing cities. El Paso borders the state of New Mexico and the country of Mexico with its Mexican sister-city of Juarez which lies just across the Rio Grande.

The historic flavor of Spanish explorers and the culture of Mexico permeates just about everything in El Paso including a substantial Hispanic population.
